the contentment of an educated gentleman

by sophia chiu

woolf

     woolf,

you sultry british chick.

heading down the crossroads of bread and roses

heart banging in her chest, book bag slamming against her hip

give me a smile. all you need is love, eh?

winking, lascivious flirtation

he’s behind her, meandering drunken steps.

lady chatterley. moll flanders. fanny hill. you’re gorgeous, baby girl.

the contentment, the contempt, the contention of an educated gentleman

in a glittering world of unwritten pages, waiting

just waiting to extend his guidance to the inferior sex

come on, honey, he croons. give me a kiss.

the sweet silkiness of twilight, the twittering of mating calls, birds lushed up in the trees, hiding from dawn.

hair tossing, hot steamy feminist lit

the definition is in the reading, not the creation, at least to the uneducated.

i know your type! he shouts. i understand you!

she turns, illuminated by the streetlight

a curved smile, teetering on the precipice

of something dangerous: he’s playing by her rules now

no, she says slowly. your literary hero is dickens.

he’s interested. that’s a beautiful statement, he presses.

yes, she says, smile unfurling, the last three letters notwithstanding. I think that’s simple enough for you to understand.

his eyes round with shock, as if seeing, possibly understanding her for the first time.

hips swaying, shoulders back. the satisfaction of an educated gentlewoman.

Broken Stitches (Sonnet poem)

Rainy days,

Passing cars,

Garbage lays

In broken shards.

Earth’s surface is full of broken stitches;

We’re mending and sewing it together.

If you look, you’ll see some major glitches,

Plastic bags floating down like feathers.

Plastic in the ocean,

Plastic on land,

Plastic is coastin’

Even though it’s banned.

If we try, we can make a difference.

We just need to gather our confidence.
